Think
Again – Remembering Fred Pollack
Our
religion is extraordinary in that we are constantly asked to remember,“Remember
the Sabbath” “Remember that which the Amalakites did”. Remembering on Seder
night. We of course have annual Days of remembrance, Yom Hashoah and Yom
Hazikaron. Remembering is an active state it is about being proactive about the
past. Judaism has always taught to strengthen our connection to our past, and to
our History. I guess knowing where you come from gives you direction to know
where you are going. Knowing your point of departure gives you a clearer view of
your destination.
This
week one of our founding members passed away, Fred Pollack His story made me
“think again” on the resilience and spirit of our parents, the previous
generation the generation which survived World War 2. Those people were forced
to start all over again in a new country. It is the tale of the wandering Jew.
It is the tale of the birth of our synagogue, and we remember them again to
continue their legacy. So allow me to reminisce about Fred’s Life
Fred
was born in Vienna in 1926. When the Nazis walked into Austria in 1938 he was
sent to an orphanage in Sth France. His mother somehow made her way to England
as a hired help and immediately sent for Fred to join her in England. Fred was
the only survivor of that orphanage. In London Fred met up with similar boys his
age, refugees of the kinder-transport who fled Europe and made their way to
London. They formed everlasting friendships. At the end of the war Fred joined
the air force and was stationed in Singapore and from there found his way to
Australia where he started tailoring in Kings X. In 1949 Claire followed Fred to
Australia and were married in the Great Synagogue. Over the next few years
together they moved house no less than 17 different times. They lived near
Parramatta and Fred became treasurer of the Parramatta synagogue. In 1967 with
the help of good friends and especially their friends Harold Levy and Fay Marco
they bought into Pearson’s florist. The rest is history building a very
successful business over the next 40 years. Harold Levy who introduced the
Pollack’s to Coogee shule was the 4th President of Coogee Synagogue. The 1st
being Jack Hochstadt in 1960, then Arthur Falk in 1961; followed by Dr Bill
Burns in 1962 and then Harold in 1963. Fred and Claire Pollack were good friends
of all these people. They were then introduced to a “real refugee” from Poland
Harry Gutman who later became the 5th President of Coogee. Mr Gutman’s tenure of
Presidency holds the record and lasted for 25 years whilst the earlier
Presidents had tenures for just a few years each. It must have been the early
Rabbis! Fred and Claire have been members for over 50 years at Coogee. The
family have celebrated many simchas over the generations and are part of the
fabric of our congregation.
From
my perspective Fred was a respected member of our congregation and I trust that
everyone connected to our congregation sees value and grows spiritually, morally
and energetically by mere association to the congregation. I believe that we can
market our community to the next generation although they are more demanding and
discerning. Our demographics at the synagogue have changed with the advent of
that other group of wandering Jews the South Africans. One of our later
Presidents, in fact President Number 8, David Ende was often quoted saying “the
more you attend shule the cheaper it is”.
OK
I am sounding like an old Rabbi with greying beard waving his finger at you
“remember vot I telling you!”
Fred
was always well dressed with suit and tie, even when he was at the markets, he
enjoyed life loved bridge and bowls was content with his lot but above all he
loved his family, his 11 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. May his
memory be blessed.
As
always see you in shulegood
